Courtney Groft, 19, of first block of Sedgwick Drive located in Reading Township, Adams County, was pronounced dead at WellSpan York Hospital on Saturday at 3:10 p.m., the release states.
Groft lost control of her vehicle and struck a telephone pole at 2325 East Berlin Road in Adams County on Friday night at approximately 5:28 p.m., according to the release.
Following the crash she was transported to the hospital where she later passed. The official cause of death was listed as "blunt force head trauma due to complications related to a single motor vehicle crash" and the manner of death was listed as accidental, as stated on the release.
There will be no autopsy but a routine toxicology test was performed, according to the release.
Groft was a Christian and prior to the release from the coroner's office, her church released a statement on her passing, asking for prayers for her parents and saying, “Courtney was an amazing young woman and will be greatly missed by many.”
She was a graduate of Bermudian Springs High School, and a freshman studying Secondary Education at Penn State York freshman, according to Penn State York sports.
She was a volleyball player according to her social media. She was scheduled to play a game against Penn State Greater Allegheny on Monday, according to her Penn State York sports profile.
He coach, Keith Hartman, was one of the first people to post about Groft’s sudden passing, saying in part, “This has been so heartbreaking for myself, my family and her teammates...I've coached Courtney since she was 16 and it was an honor for me when she decided to come play for me at Penn State York.”
Her community continues to mourn her sharing their grief online, one friend even said, “Truly the most perfect person I’ve ever met.”
Her family has asked people to use the hashtag #love4court when sharing memories about their daughter Courtney Groft, according to YorkDispatch.
The community is running two fundraisers for her. The first is a t- shirt sale and all proceeds will go to the Groft family.
The second fundraiser is a GoFundMe campaign to help her family as well.
“You could always count on her to be there no matter what. She would drop everything for anyone, no matter the hour or what was going on in her own life. She was one of a kind,” her friends said on the campaign page. “We all want to come together to help out her family with whatever expenses they come across during this very difficult time.”
The campaign launched Monday morning and in less than seven hours it has already raised more than $6,000 of a $10,000 goal.
Groft is survived by her parents, Christine and Lee; brother, Tyler; extended family; classmates; teammates and friends, according to her social media.
Funeral and memorial service details have not been released.
